Culture of Punjab is one of the distinctive cultures found anywhere around the globe. The Punjabi culture is renowned for various reasons. There is an exclusiveness and vivacity in the lifestyle of the Punjabi people.The state of Punjab is located in north-west India, which is rinsed by five rivers.

Punjab in Persian means the land of five rivers, which are Jhelam, Raavi, Chenab, Satluj and Beas. There is a great importance to these rivers in the culture of Punjab. These rivers have religious significance also.


Punjab is a land of fairs and festivals. Numerous fairs and festivals are celebrated here with great enthusiasm and fanfare. According to a Punjabi idiom, there are 30 days and 32 festivals in a month in Punjab. The uniqueness of the culture of Punjab lies in these festivals.

Baisakhi is one of the major festivals of Punjab. The festival is celebrated in the month of Baisakh- a month which marks the beginning of traditional Indian calendar. Punjabi people and the young girls always wait for this joyous occasion. The Baisakhi festival is a great opportunity to observe the traditional life of Punjabi people from close quarters.

Teej festival is another major festival that occurs in the month of Sawan. The celebration of Teej starts from the third day of the month. The festival encourages Punjabi poets to write melodious songs and poems.


Some other festivals of Punjab are Puranmashi, Basant Panchami, Karva Chauth and Raksha Bandhan. The uniqueness of culture of Punjab shines through these festivals. Punjabi culture is at the heart of the Punjabi people.
